Sheffield retirement residents are a tight-knit bunch

21 March 2022

A group of friends and neighbours at a Sheffield retirement community have brought their knitting needles together for a good cause, making clothes for the neonatal unit at the city’s hospital.

Residents knitting together

Residents from Sanctuary Retirement Living’s Roman Ridge regularly get together for a ‘knit and natter’, and after hearing that The Jessop Wing at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals were running short of premature baby clothes, decided to dedicate their time to the cause.

Over the last six months, the group has created a huge selection of tiny baby cardigans, hats, mittens and booties to support parents whose babies are born prematurely at the unit.

Resident knitter, Pat Moss, said, “We begged and borrowed patterns and wool and the response was enormous. We carried on knitting through all the restrictions because we couldn’t meet as usual and when the time came to hand over the fruits of our labour – we found that we could fill a huge box!”

Helen Flower, Wellbeing & Inclusion Assistant at Roman Ridge added, “It’s been wonderful to see them getting together to knit their donations and support the hospital in this way.”

Sanctuary Retirement Living is committed to supporting residents and launched its Your Home Your Life campaign to make sure residents are supported to lead independent and healthy lifestyles in an environment which encourages social connections where true friendships can be made.

Conveniently located, with easy access to Sheffield City Centre, Meadowhall shopping centre and local amenities, Roman Ridge provides apartments and communal facilities for over 55s designed to offer everything you need to enjoy a happy, fulfilling retirement.
