The team at Sanctuary Retirement Living’s Wimborne House on Truro Road pulled out all the stops for the nostalgic and free event, which was their first major celebration since the pandemic began. Residents were joined by their family and friends along with special guests including the Mayor of Gravesham, Cllr Lyn Milner, and Councillor Shane Mochrie-Cox.

Everyone enjoyed a host of favourite school fete games from hook a duck and spin the wheel, as well as live music from singer Lucy Amos, a pop-up pub and a host of traditional fete treats.

The event was generously supported by local businesses including The Air of the Dog inflatable pub company, Anniemazing Balloons, The Gravesend Florist and food was donated by the staff themselves, as well as Morrisons and Iceland.

The retirement community, which provides apartments with communal facilities for over 55s, shares its site with a Sanctuary Supported Living service which provides supported housing for adults with learning disabilities, whose residents and staff were invited along to join the celebrations.

Many staff, who have shown incredible dedication to residents throughout the pandemic also gave up their day off to help make the event possible.

Charlotte Smith, Wellbeing and Inclusion Assistant at Wimborne House, said: “It was wonderful to welcome the mayor and councillor and to see the residents and their visitors enjoying our old-fashioned school fete.

“All the team worked so hard to plan and organise the day. It was an opportunity for everyone to reconnect with one another safely after what’s been a difficult 18 months for many.  We all had a lot of fun.”
