Scarborough retirement community’s team receive Mayor's award

19 May 2021

Staff at Sanctuary Retirement Living’s Jazz Court in Eastfield, Scarborough are celebrating winning a prestigious Mayor’s Commendation Award, in recognition of their commitment and service to residents during the pandemic.

The entire Jazz Court team were secretly nominated for the award by a group of residents at the retirement community, for their ‘selfless commitment and exceptional service in the support of vulnerable residents throughout the Covid-19 global pandemic’.

Staff have consistently gone above and beyond to keep their residents safe, well and happy over the last year. The team ensured residents continued to feel involved in community life and adapted their usual busy events calendar to take social distancing into account – from corridor bingo, to door-to-door trolley charity coffee mornings and doorway ‘chairobics’.

Liz Jones, Retirement Living Manager and Linda Shaw, Care and Support Assistant, were thrilled to be presented with the award on behalf of the team, by Mayor Councillor Hazel Lynskey in a ceremony at the town’s Spa.

Liz Jones said: “We are all so proud of the service and are just thrilled that after such a challenging year, our residents have nominated us. The plaque will, of course, have pride of place on our wall.”

Neil Smith, Area Service Manager for Yorkshire, added: “Receiving an award like this means so much to the Jazz Court team, especially given that the nomination came directly from residents themselves. They’ve all worked incredibly hard, pulling together in very difficult circumstances to make sure that residents received the practical care and wellbeing support that they needed, despite the challenges of the pandemic.”
