Staff and residents at Goodwin Court in East Barnet are celebrating after receiving a ‘Good’ rating from the Care Quality Commission, following a recent inspection.

Goodwin Court is a purpose-built retirement community in East Barnet, which provides apartments and communal facilities with care and support for people over 55.  The CQC inspection at the service was the first to be completed at a property where Sanctuary Retirement Living provides the onsite care and support, since the start of Covid pandemic. Previous recent inspections of other Sanctuary Retirement Living properties were solely focussed on infection prevention and control.

The CQC’s report noted that the feedback from health and social care professionals and family members was very positive and said that people felt safe living at the service, with robust infection control and Covid-19 procedures in place. One resident’s relative told the CQC inspector: "Yes, she does feel safe. For example, if something isn't right with her, they will inform me and that makes her feel safe."

As well as safety, the report looked at three other key lines of enquiry – considering whether the service is also effective, caring, and well-led – and rated it as ‘Good’ in each area, leading to a ‘Good’ rating overall.

The CQC inspector found that residents were supported to have maximum choice, independence and control of their lives, and were treated with dignity and respect by the onsite care team. Staff supported residents in the least restrictive way possible and with residents’ best interests in mind. One resident commented: “In my experience they are very kind and caring to me.” Another added: “They do their best to make me feel independent.”

Maria Williams, Registered Retirement Living Manager at Goodwin Court, said: “Our team is committed to ensuring that Goodwin Court is a caring and supportive place to live, where residents can enjoy life and live as independently as possible. We’re very proud to have received this recognition from the CQC. It’s a huge achievement for the team, who have strived to maintain quality standards and safety throughout this unprecedented time.”
