People living and working at Doddington Court retirement service, which provides retirement apartments with on-site care and support, have strong links with their local community and a love of the countryside. When they participate in the weekly Clap for Our Carers every Thursday evening, local farmers arrive at the service with their tractors.

At 8pm, the farmers clap and honk their tractor horns to show their appreciation for the ongoing dedication and care shown by Doddington Court team. In return, residents and staff clap and cheer for the farmers, to show their gratitude for the essential work they do in providing food.

The farmers’ visit is particularly enjoyed by residents Arthur Woods and Charles Shepherd, who both come from farming backgrounds. After socially-distanced clapping last Thursday, Arthur and Charles, along with residents Sue Scotney-Long and Maureen Hall, took the opportunity to pose with their favourite tractors. Arthur was particularly pleased to be able to get up-close with a John Deere tractor, as he previously worked with them for 52 years, prior to retirement.

Emma Hunt, Chef Manager, said: “We’d like to thank the local farmers for the great work they’re doing and for coming to clap with us each week. Their visit is a highlight for many residents, especially for those who come from the same background. Many residents are isolating in their apartments and the whole Doddington Court team is working hard to keep their spirits up. Seeing the farmers arriving on their tractors always brings a smile to their faces and reminds them that they’re not alone – we’re all one big community.”
