Baskeyfield House residents knit for national cause

8 September 2020

Residents at Baskeyfield House in Stoke-on-Trent, part of Sanctuary Retirement Living, have been busy knitting clothing and blankets for premature babies.

At Baskeyfield House, residents have their own apartments with communal facilities, with onsite care and support if needed. There are also regular activities and events, organised by the Wellbeing and Inclusion team, including a weekly Knit and Knatter meet-up.

Although they were not able to meet in person during lockdown, as many residents were shielding in their apartments, the Knit and Knatter group kept themselves busy by knitting items for premature babies, including blankets, cardigans, hats, gloves and booties.

When the local hospital’s neonatal unit confirmed they already had enough knitted items in stock, the Baskeyfield House Wellbeing and Inclusion team got in touch with the Facebook group ‘Handmade with love for preemies UK’. The group works with over 100 neonatal units across the country, sending items to where they’re needed most.

Karen Leigh, Wellbeing and Inclusion Assistant at Baskeyfield House, said: “I’m so proud of how many beautiful baby items the residents’ Knit and Knatter group have made and I’m sure they’re going to be very well-received. The residents really enjoyed making them and they are already looking forward to their next project, knitting blankets for animal rescue charities and warm hats for local homeless people. It’s great that they can give something back to their community.”
