Here we grow again! Residents’ gardening competition back for 2022

15 March 2022

Sanctuary Supported Living and Sanctuary Retirement Living residents are being encouraged to get outdoors and get growing, with the launch of their annual Ready Steady Grow gardening competition.

The competition aims to support residents to learn life skills, meet new people and build their self-confidence. Residents who took part in previous years said they enjoyed feeling both the mental and physical health benefits from getting out in their gardens and growing their own fruit and vegetables.

This year’s competition focuses on three themes - ‘Growing Green,’ ‘Health and Wellbeing,’ and ‘Beautiful Blooms’ - and the competition is open to all Sanctuary Supported Living and Sanctuary Retirement Living residents, whether they have access to a large communal garden or allotment or their own small garden, balcony or courtyard. The winners will be chosen by a public vote in August, and prizes include trophies, certificates and garden centre vouchers.

Sanctuary’s Co Regulation Team, who have organised the competition, are offering funding and support for residents to take part. Sue Nutter, Resident Engagement Officer, said: “Residents voting for their favourite categories online worked really well last year, and we are delighted to be running the competition again. It’s a great opportunity for residents to develop and learn new skills whilst growing healthy food or recycling. Gardening is very therapeutic and it’s great for mental wellbeing. We look forward to seeing this year’s entries!”
