Outstanding levels of care at Bideford retirement living community

A Devon retirement living service has been rated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) as delivering “outstanding” levels of care with staff going “above and beyond”.

Sanctuary Retirement Living’s Moreton Court, in Bideford, received an overall assessment of “Good” in the inspection, with a rating of “Outstanding” under the report’s “Is this service caring?” sub-heading.

When assessing the personal care delivered for activities like personal hygiene and eating, inspectors noted a number of instances where staff went “above and beyond what was expected of them”.

These included: unplanned checks outside of planned care visit times, hourly checks on a resident who had fallen in the night and a care worker who drove back from their home after their shift to pick up urgently needed medication for a resident with no means of transport.

One relative told inspectors: “I know if any hiccups happen, 100 per cent they will look after (family member) if I'm away. They will sort it out and it will be perfect… they are wonderful and gentle in their approach.”

Another commented: “They (staff) are just kindness to me… it's the best place we could have found… it's made a difference to all our lives.”

A recent thank you card noted by inspectors in the report also read: “We would like to say a big 'thank you' to the team … they certainly put 'CARE' at the top of their list.”

Outside of caring provision, the report commented positively on innovative ways the service supported people with communication needs, such as trialling a system of using eye contact with picture cards with residents unable to communicate verbally.

It also credited the service’s variety of activities, from coffee mornings and quizzes to gardening clubs and Indian-themed suppers and the lengths to which these pursuits addressed social isolation.

Registered manager Helga Penhale said: “We’re thrilled to hear about the latest rating from the CQC. I’m immensely proud of our dedicated staff and the extra lengths they go to in order to ensure residents are safe, cared for and happy.

“We are constantly looking for ways in which we can improve so we will be reflecting on the report as a whole but this report is great news for staff and residents alike.
