Sanctuary Retirement Living residents learning how to get online

Moreton Court residents get connected

4 July 2017

Older people in Bideford have been getting connected with the help of a series of workshops explaining how to make the most of the Internet and modern technology.

Sanctuary’s Moreton Court retirement living scheme, on Birdwood Crescent, has been running a number of sessions under the Sanctuary Online initiative, with tutors from training provider We Are Digital providing one-to-one and group tuition.

Resident Violet Steel said: “It was really useful to be able to have someone to show us how to get online and access emails, especially as everything is becoming more computerised as time goes by.”

Fellow resident Zoe Hudson added: “We have had many difficulties in accessing and using the iPad – the tutor has been very patient and enabled me to access this and show me how to do the updates on it.”

National figures show that 12.6 million people lacked the digital skills necessary to access the Internet in 2016.

Sanctuary Online aims to train around 600 residents across the country and improve their digital skills so they can take advantage of the online world. As part of the programme, there is also a City and Guilds qualification available for residents who want to use the training to improve their employability skills.

Courses are open to Sanctuary residents of all ages and skill levels. To book a one-to-one session at your home or a community venue, text Sanctuary to 07537 416 944, call 03333 442 561 or email sanctuary@we-are-digital.co.uk.
