Digital training course gets Scarborough residents online

7 July 2017

People living at a retirement living scheme in Scarborough have been getting to grips with the online world thanks to a digital training course.

Residents at Sanctuary’s Jazz Court have been getting a crash course in laptops, tablets and other computing devices to better understand how to make the most of the web.

Jazz Court residents get connected

Resident Shirley Shaw was bought an iPad by her family so they could keep in touch. Until the course, she hadn’t even connected it to the internet.

She said: “I have been very grateful for the training; I now access Facebook and FaceTime to keep in touch with my nephews and nieces.

“It’s brought us closer together and is absolutely marvellous.”

Three people who took the course – Rhoda, Gary and Dennis – have now signed up for extra training to enable them to be ‘digital champions’ at the scheme, where they have volunteered to help others who might need support with a specific issue further down the line.

Sanctuary’s Jazz Court has been hosting the sessions as part of the Sanctuary Online initiative, which runs in partnership with training provider We Are Digital.

Tutors from We Are Digital worked in teams and one-to-one to help residents understand how to use the Internet on the digital devices most familiar to them, whether PC, laptop, phone or tablet.

Scheme services manager Gill O’Dowd commented: “National figures show that 12.6 million people lacked the digital skills necessary to access the Internet in 2016.

“The Sanctuary Online course has been fantastic in helping improve our residents’ understanding of the Internet and allowing them to make full use of it.”

Sanctuary Online aims to train around 600 residents across the country and improve their digital skills so they can take advantage of the online world. As part of the programme, there is also a City and Guilds qualification available for residents who want to use the training to improve their employability skills.

Courses are open to Sanctuary residents of all ages and skill levels. To book a session at your home, text Sanctuary to 07537 416 944, call 03333 442 561 or email sanctuary@we-are-digital.co.uk.
