Residents at Millbrook House in Ely getting to grips with the digital world

Millbrook House goes digital

28 June 2017

Residents of an Ely retirement living scheme have been getting to grips with the digital world, thanks to a series of workshops.

Sanctuary’s Millbrook House, on Lode Close, has been running a number of sessions under the Sanctuary Online initiative, in partnership with training provider We Are Digital.

We Are Digital tutors have been working with residents in both one-to-one and group sessions to help them understand how to use the Internet on their preferred digital devices, whether PC, laptop, phone or tablet.

Resident Olive Hunt has been able to make the most of her laptop – a gift from her daughter – after learning basic computer skills and how to browse the web.

Meanwhile, Connie Kendrick has been learning how to use web-based telephone service Skype to stay in touch with her family, some of whom live in different countries.

Scheme services manager Debbie Cram said: “National figures show that 12.6 million people lacked the digital skills necessary to access the Internet in 2016.

“Holding the Sanctuary Online initiative has been fantastic in teaching our residents how to make the most of modern technology to stay up-to-date and in touch with those closest to them.”

Sanctuary Online aims to train around 600 residents across the country and improve their digital skills so they can take advantage of the online world. As part of the programme, there is also a City and Guilds qualification available for residents who want to use the training to improve their employability skills.

Courses are open to Sanctuary residents of all ages and skill levels. To book a one-to-one session at your home or a community venue, text Sanctuary to 07537 416 944, call 03333 442 561 or email sanctuary@we-are-digital.co.uk
