Valerie Smith, 56, was encouraged to move into Sanctuary Retirement Living’s Hillyard House in 2019. by her family in 2017.

Hillyard House resident, Valerie Smith, is all smiles during a Valentine's Day celebration

Before being welcomed to the retirement community in Brixton, Val was living in a nearby community home. Since moving into her own apartment, she has settled well and enjoyed getting to know other residents and staff.

Living at Hillyard House has meant that Val has in some ways become more independent thanks to the on-site facilities including the hairdressers, and a shop for everyday essentials. Personal and domestic care staff are on hand to provide a tailored package of support, with the added peace of mind of a pendant alarm if needed.

Val’s sister visits her every other week and popping out to the shops is easy as the bus stop is just around the corner.

Her favourite hobbies include sewing and crochet and she particularly enjoys taking part in the group quiz and cooking activities organised by the Wellbeing & Inclusion Assistants. The sessions give Val the opportunity to get together with the other residents in the activity room.

I like all the great facilities at Hillyard House, and I am taken care of very well by all the staff including the care who offer good support.

Located in a residential area of Brixton, in South West London, Hillyard House provides apartments and communal facilities for over 55s.
