Jackie, 75, has lived at the Sanctuary Retirement Living community in South London since 2018. Before moving to Trellis House, Jackie lived with her sister in Wandsworth but their home became too big for them to manage and they felt they needed more support.

While living at Trellis House, Jackie’s made many friends, including her neighbours Roy, David and Joyce. Joyce has taught Jackie how to knit, visits her every day and brings over her favourite pie and mash meal once a week. Jackie said: “There’s always someone around to chat to”.  She’s often enjoying a cuppa in the communal lounge, or taking part in activities such as bingo, organised by the Wellbeing and Inclusion team. She adds: “I particularly enjoy it when  when we have professional entertainers singing all the old songs. I know all the words and have a great time singing along!”.

Every week Jackie looks forward to a phone call from Anna who works for Sanctuary in Banbury. Originally kickstarted during the first months of the pandemic in 2020, the befriending programme aims to connect Sanctuary’s residents with members of staff, based on shared interests. The regular phone calls offer the chance to reduce feelings of loneliness and increase their support network.

A true friendship has developed, and Anna even surprised Jackie with a visit when restrictions allowed. The pair were thrilled to meet in person and have met a second time, going out for a coffee and cake together.

Jackie said: “I’m happy and contented at Trellis House – I love my flat and have made some really good friends since moving here. I really look forward to my weekly calls from Anna and I was delighted when she even took the time to call me on Christmas Day.”

Located in a residential area of Colliers Wood, close to the River Wandle, and within walking distance of local shops and amenities, Trellis House provides apartments and communal facilities for over 60s.
