George Hitchman

Wimborne House resident George Hitchman, 68, says that he very much feels part of his local community.

George and his wife Suzan moved into their apartment in Sanctuary Retirement Living’s Wimborne House in Gravesend in late 2016, as they wanted somewhere more manageable, where they could socialise and meet other people. As Suzan receives a personalised package of care and support, George and Suzan also liked the added reassurance and peace of mind of having a care and support team on-hand.

George particularly enjoys the regular calendar of activities and social events, organised by the service’s Wellbeing and Inclusion team. His favourite activities include Bingo and coffee morning, and he has made a lot of new friends. The staff work closely with local and national groups, including Age UK, to create a tight-knit community feel both within the service and the local area. This includes children from the local King’s Farm school, who created colourful artwork to lift residents’ spirits during lockdown. George also enjoyed the recent socially-distanced performance from the London Fanfare Trumpets, who played timeless classics including the James Bond theme tune.

While their apartment includes a fitted kitchen, George and Suzan sometimes choose to eat at the onsite Taste restaurant, where they can meet and catch up with their friends over a tasty meal. Wimborne House is also within close reach of public transport connections, making it easy for them to get out and about when they want.

George said: “I feel happy living here. I like having our own apartment as well as being able to join in with all the activities and meet new people, and the staff are very kind and caring when looking after my wife.”
